Kiwanis History

The Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills was chartered as one of 7,700 clubs in 80 countries in 1922. Our motto is "Serving the Children of the World".

On December 9, 1922, a group of men of the Sandhills organized the Kiwanis Club of Aberdeen. In 1937, the name was changed to the Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills. Over the past 90 years, the Club has grown to include over 100 members “vigorously dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth locally and globally.”

Charter members of Kiwanis included the leading citizens from all parts of Moore County. As club secretary Richard Tufts said in minutes of an early meeting, “What better way can there be of finding out how to pull together, than when we meet and talk it over at our weekly Kiwanis meetings.”

For more than 90-plus years our Kiwanis Club has upheld its motto of “We Build” demonstrated in our 1920s project of planting trees along Midland Road and, more recently, constructing a building for the Head Start reading program.

Much emphasis has been placed on work with the children of the community. For a number of years awards have been made to outstanding students through the Junior Builders Cup and the Picquet Music Festival. K-Kids Clubs, Builders Clubs and Key Clubs have been established in the local schools, and have introduced young people to Kiwanis.

Our Kiwanis Club continues to live up to its motto “We Build” in the upbuilding of our community.
